KINDERGARTEN

The Kindergarten program at Firm Foundation uses a phonics-based reading curriculum. Instruction in letter sounds, short and long vowel words, and special sounds are all used to facilitate reading. Students learn numbers to 100, basic addition and subtractions facts, and time and money facts over the course of the year in math. Science and social studies are taught thematically with a Christian worldview. Daily Bible lessons focus on important people and events in the Bible as well as key tenants of the Christian faith and weekly Bible verses learned. Students have music, physical education, and art classes each week. Students attend class all day Monday / Wednesday or Tuesday / Thursday and every other Friday.
ELEMENTARY (1-5)

We consider the elementary age to be kindergarten through fifth grade. At this level, emphasis is placed on learning the skills necessary to be competent in all subject areas, including daily Bible instruction. Students will gain a strong foundation in reading, language (phonics, spelling, and vocabulary), creative writing, handwriting, and mathematics. Additionally, students are instructed in science, history, and health. The basic curriculum is enhanced by physical education, art, Spanish, music, computer, and library.

We primarily use the A Beka curriculum in the elementary grades. This quality curriculum is based on Scriptural foundations. Our Bible curriculum is through ACSI, and our handwriting program is D'Nealian printing and cursive.

Our children are tested academically every year using the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT). Traditionally, our classes have scored in the 70th-80th percentiles compared to national averages.
MIDDLE (6-8)

When it comes to building a firm foundation, we believe that the Bible provides the essential building block. While Bible is a specific content area for all our middle school classes, it is also something we work to integrate into each of our classes. In an effort to provide both high academic standards and develop a biblical worldview, our students have a rigorous curriculum written and taught from a Biblical perspective.

Our high-standards core subjects (language, mathematics, science, history, Bible) are enhanced by instruction in computers, health and physical education, as well as an array of elective choices. Elective offerings vary from year to year, and have included beginning guitar, robotics, web design, culinary arts, choir, pottery, photography, multimedia art, etc.
HIGH SCHOOL

It’s not about us! Let’s be honest, we all struggle with thinking the world revolves around us. We are all in need of a Copernican revolution. Life is all about the Son, Jesus Christ. At Firm Foundation Christian High School, we seek to glorify God in everything we pursue. Our staff, transformed by the Gospel, seeks to model the devotion and discipline of Christ to our students. Christ is our Master Teacher. As we follow Jesus, our core virtues are humility, faith, discipline and grace. We define educational success as growth in two areas: Christ-like character and academic excellence. Our primary goal is to help the students build their lives on the Lord Jesus Christ. Our prayer is that, out of a dynamic relationship with Jesus, students will be motivated to excel in all their studies.

We provide a rigorous and relevant curriculum that approaches all fields of study from a Biblical perspective. We have a partnership with Northwest Nazarene University that allows our students to earn college credits during their junior and senior years. The most important partnership we have is with the parents. We firmly believe that God has given parents the primary responsibility of raising their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. A united front between home and school is key to a successful and God-glorifying experience for all. Our regular classes run Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday with Enrichment Wednesdays for electives and more concentrated block classes. Some of the different electives we offer are robotics, computer technology, web design, guitar, pottery, culinary arts, etc.

to him be glory forever. Amen”

MUSIC

angel playing instrumentMusic class is provided two days a week for kindergarten. Grades one through five have music two days one week and three days the next. Throughout the year we learn music theory, including solfege and note recognition, through playing fun games with giant flashcards. We learn about proper singing techniques, like good posture and vocal warm-ups. We sing a variety of songs: scripture-based, patriotic, traditional, and fun! Students learn about rhythm through reading, speaking, playing, writing rhythmic notation, and from movement. Students in grades three and four learn to play the flutophone and they work through a music theory workbook from A Beka. Music electives available to the sixth through eleventh grades include guitar and choir.

ART

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: . . .So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” (Genesis 1:26a & 27). We are made in the image of a wonderfully creative God. When we create, in art or in other areas, we are exercising the attribute of creativity that God has bestowed upon us. The elements of art, including color, form, texture, pattern, balance, rhythm, etc. are part of God’s creation, and testify to God’s existence and His creativity(Psalm 19:1-3). Our art program allows kindergarten through fifth grade students to participate in classroom teacher-led classes where they learn to use the elements of art and various art techniques to complete projects. After students learn the basic concepts and techniques of drawing, painting, and sculpture, students expand their skills through a number of different mediums including watercolors, pastels, paper maché and clay.

Middle and high school students may take art elective classes that allow them to further develop concepts and techniques learned in earlier grades. Offerings have included drawing/painting, multi-media/sculpture, pottery and digital photography.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The academic program at Firm Foundation Christian School provides a physical education class two days a week for kindergarten through sixth grade and two/three days per week for seventh and eighth grades. Throughout the year students work on improving skill levels, experiment with new physical activities, promote caring, cooperation and compassion towards others.

For high school students, physical education is offered as a Wednesday enrichment class, with units on personal fitness and team sports. Some units include ultimate frisbee, soccer, basketball, hockey and much more. We also offer a girls-only aerobics class for grades nine through twelve.

COMPUTERS

laptop-networkIn our computer instructional program, we seek to teach the students how to responsibly use Microsoft WORD, PowerPoint, EXCEL, and Publisher. Basic keyboarding skills begin during the final quarter of first grade. The depth of knowledge and expectations increase as students progress through the grades. Students use Mavis Beacon typing instruction to learn keyboard skills. Students begin learning how to access and use the internet during the third grade. Students in all grades have the opportunity to learn how to use the internet and locate and use available information for reports and slide show projects.

LIBRARY

Firm Foundation’s collection of library materials continues to grow each year. We offer a large children’s collection with story books and non-fiction titles, chapter books for more advanced readers, biographies, many fun oversized books, reference books for student reports, encyclopedias for research and more.
SCIENCE

sunFirm Foundation’s middle and high school science classes offer rigorous courses of study held in the science lab. Each topic studied is presented from a Christian perspective and is reflective of God’s order, provision, and reasonableness as revealed in His physical creation.

Grade 7
Seventh grade uses A Beka’s Order and Reality text that introduces students to the scientific method and gives them the opportunity to apply it as they study soil science, plants, the human body, principles of physical science, atmospheric science, weather, classification, microscopy, creation and insects. It is highlighted with lab experiences that include introductory dissections, microscope work, experiments, and research projects.

Grade 8
A Beka’s Matter and Motion text provides a challenging curriculum enriched further with student-conducted lab experiences and science adventures that use the scientific method to focus on God's planned design. The students learn about astronomy, matter in motion, molecules, birds, science versus Evolution, magnets and magnetism, and electricity.

Physical Science
Using the A Beka text, Grade 9 studies the Science of the Physical Creation. This includes meteorology, oceanography, plus introductions to chemistry, geology, and physics. Held in the Firm Foundation science laboratory, students employ the scientific method to carry out experiments that make the text alive. Engaging investigations apply the text in a hands-on format to reach many learning styles. Science in ninth grade continues striving to reach young people for the Lord and support the students as they learn and train in the Christian way of life.

Biology
This class delves deeply into the field of biology. Numerous lab experiences such as fetal pig and frog dissections, microscope work, and research papers reinforce the text and provide the opportunity for students to study, explore, and know the intricacy of God’s design down to the cellular level.

Chemistry
Chemistry uses A Beka's Chemistry, Precision and Design text. This course builds a strong base for the study of chemistry. It discusses applications, and applies them using lab experiences. Some of the topics studied include stoichiometry, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the periodic table, chemical bonds, and intermolecular force, among others. Students will carry with them an appreciation of the many benefits chemistry has brought us, plus a clearer understanding of the physical world God has created.
