In first grade, we use the Christian-based A Beka curriculum for the majority of our subject areas: math, reading, spelling, science, health, community helpers, and social studies. Through A Beka, we are able to easily integrate Bible not only during our daily Bible time but also throughout the day in all of our subject areas as well as in our own character building with everyday situations. Our D’Nealian handwriting program makes for an easy transition into cursive and our weekly spelling words help us with our writing program. Our math program introduces new concepts and builds upon itself to create concrete understanding of the objectives. Students approach math understanding with the knowledge that our God is a God of order and truth and therefore they should strive to be good stewards of what God has given them. In science, the students understand that God is our great designer and from Him all things were created. We enjoy learning about plants, animals, insects, ourselves, and the mechanics of how toys work. We are able to learn more about God’s creation as we “travel around” the United States and many other countries in our social studies curriculum, learning about God’s amazing creation. Our readers coordinate with our phonics program to create a strong foundation for successful readers. In our reading, we have Bible verses that follow many of our stories. The related verses as well as the comprehension questions help students apply Christian principles to their lives. We use the Bob Jones Bible curriculum and are able to visit God’s word daily to grow closer to Him.
