Fifth grade is a year of discovery and learning about the world God created for us. The Old Testament is our focus for Bible. We learn about the lives of God’s prophets and the mercy and judgment that He shows for those who follow Him. In history we begin with the Creation story of Genesis and move forward through the ancient history of Asia, Europe and Africa, continuing on to recent history of those continents, and studying the influence of Biblical heritage throughout the world. Students complete a Nation Notebook on a country of their choice and we celebrate by having a Cultural Feast with foods from all over the world. Fifth graders also go to Omnimax Theater to watch “The Mysteries of Egypt.” This is always a favorite. For science, students learn about mammals, reptiles, ocean life, and also incorporate some physical science as well. Near the beginning of the year, fifth graders go to the zoo to gather research for a mammal poster they present to their class. Math becomes a little more challenging in fifth grade. Learning to multiply and divide fractions and how to convert measurements are just a few concepts students will learn. Toward the end of the year, we start a brief study of geometry. In reading, we read both non-fiction and fiction stories about Biblical role models throughout history. Language class intensifies in fifth grade. We spend a lot of time on prepositions at the beginning of the year, which makes identifying parts of speech a lot easier. We also spend a lot of time identifying adjectives and adverbs. We use God’s gift of language to become skilled at writing paragraphs and research reports. All in all, our goal is to educate our fifth graders so that they can be better stewards for Christ.
